National Gallery of Ireland
Dublin, Ireland
The National Gallery of Ireland, in Dublin, houses the national collection of European and Irish fine art. It opened to the public in 1864 and has grown through several extensions, holding works that span the major European schools from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, as well as a comprehensive collection of Irish art.
Among its most celebrated paintings is Johannes Vermeer's Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid, presented to the gallery in 1987 after being twice stolen and recovered. The collection also includes a Caravaggio rediscovered in Dublin in the early 1990s.
