Courtauld Gallery
London, United Kingdom
The Courtauld Gallery is an art museum in Somerset House, on the Strand in central London. It is part of the Courtauld Institute of Art and displays the collection assembled by the institute's founders, among them the textile industrialist Samuel Courtauld, whose gift of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings forms the heart of the collection.
The gallery is especially renowned for its French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, alongside Old Master paintings, drawings and prints. Among its Dutch and Flemish holdings is Dirck van Baburen's The Procuress, a Utrecht Caravaggist picture that appears in the background of two of Vermeer's own paintings; it is not a work by Vermeer.
