View of Delft enters the national collection

The sale of the S. J. Stinstra collection on 22 May 1822, conducted by the auctioneer Jeronimo de Vries, produced one of the most consequential acquisitions in Dutch museum history. View of Delft, which had most recently belonged to the Kops family of Haarlem, was bought for 2,900 guilders by De Vries himself on behalf of the newly founded Royal Cabinet of Paintings.

Under King William I the painting went on display at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, where it has remained ever since, the single most celebrated Dutch cityscape in a public collection.
