The Royal Collection, Windsor Castle

Windsor, United Kingdom

Windsor Castle, in Berkshire, England, is a royal residence whose origins go back to the eleventh century and the reign of William the Conqueror. It is often described as the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, and has served as a home to English and British monarchs for some nine centuries.

The castle houses a significant portion of the Royal Collection, the art holdings held in trust by the sovereign, including Old Master paintings, drawings, furniture and decorative arts displayed in its State Apartments. Among the paintings associated with the collection is The Music Lesson, a work attributed to Johannes Vermeer.
