Palazzo Reale
Milan, Italy
The Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace of Milan) stands beside the Duomo in the centre of Milan, Italy, and for centuries served as the seat of the city's government and the residence of its rulers. Its present neoclassical appearance owes much to an eighteenth-century remodelling by the architect Giuseppe Piermarini, and the building was damaged by bombing during the Second World War and subsequently restored.
Today the palace is one of Milan's principal cultural venues, hosting major temporary exhibitions of historical and contemporary art rather than maintaining a single permanent collection.
