Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Palazzo Barberini
Rome, Italy
The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica is Italy's national collection of older paintings, displayed across two Roman palaces, the Palazzo Barberini and the Palazzo Corsini. The Palazzo Barberini, built in the seventeenth century for the family of Pope Urban VIII, was designed by leading Baroque architects including Carlo Maderno, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Francesco Borromini, and is celebrated for its grand salon ceiling fresco by Pietro da Cortona.
The gallery's holdings span medieval to eighteenth-century European painting, with major works by artists such as Raphael, Caravaggio, Hans Holbein the Younger, and Guido Reni. Its collection brings together works acquired by the Italian state with paintings from historic Roman family collections.
