National Museum of China
Beijing, China
The National Museum of China, on the eastern side of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, is one of the largest museums in the world. It was formed in 2003 through the merger of the Museum of the Chinese Revolution and the National Museum of Chinese History, which had occupied the same monumental building, and reopened in 2011 after a major reconstruction that greatly expanded its floor area.
Its collections trace the art and history of China across millennia, ranging from ancient bronzes, jade, and ceramics to calligraphy, painting, and material relating to the country's modern history. Admission to the permanent collections is generally free.
