Kunsthistorisches Museum

Vienna, Austria

The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History) is the principal fine-art museum of Austria, in Vienna. Opened in 1891, it was built on the Ringstrasse in a grand Italian Renaissance Revival style to house the vast collections of the Habsburg dynasty, facing its twin, the Natural History Museum, across Maria-Theresien-Platz.

Its picture gallery is among the most important in the world, with major holdings of Bruegel, Rubens, Titian, and other old masters. The museum is home to Johannes Vermeer's The Art of Painting, widely regarded as one of the artist's most ambitious and accomplished works.
