Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Bilbao, Spain
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum of modern and contemporary art in Bilbao, Spain, part of the network of museums affiliated with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Designed by the architect Frank Gehry and opened in 1997, its sculptural, titanium-clad building on the banks of the Nervion river is widely regarded as one of the most important works of architecture of its era.
The museum is often credited with helping to revitalize the city, an effect sometimes called the "Bilbao effect." It presents rotating exhibitions and a collection of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, including large-scale installations and sculpture displayed both inside and around the building.
