Encounter with the Masterpiece: Vermeer
Palazzo Madama opened its new “Encounter with the Masterpiece” cycle with a single-painting exhibition devoted to Woman in Blue Reading a Letter, shown from 5 March to 29 June 2026 as an exceptional loan from the City of Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum. The display marked the first time a painting by Vermeer had been shown in Turin, giving the city a rare encounter with one of his most concentrated domestic interiors: a woman absorbed in a private letter, her blue jacket and the map behind her turning an ordinary room into a study of silence, attention, and light.
Curated by Clelia Arnaldi di Balme, Anna La Ferla, and Giovanni Carlo Federico Villa, the project was conceived less as a trophy loan than as a focused act of interpretation. Palazzo Madama paired the Vermeer with prints, furnishings, ceramics, and cartographic material from its own collections to draw out the themes embedded in the picture: the intimate and strongly feminine scale of the scene, Vermeer's “poetics of subtraction,” the subtle range of blues that structures the light, the social world of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic, and the role of Dutch Golden Age maps, including works associated with the Blaeu family, in the background of the painting and the wider culture that produced it.
The installation also extended that close looking into an accessibility programme. A high-definition relief reproduction of the painting was accompanied by audio description in Italian and English and by an Italian Sign Language track with subtitles, produced with Tactile Vision Lab and the Istituto dei Sordi di Torino in collaboration with the local branch of the Unione Italiana Ciechi e Ipovedenti. That emphasis on attentive viewing suited a work the Rijksmuseum describes through its handling of light and colour: the radiant lapis-lazuli blue of the jacket, the pale grey tones in the sitter's skin, and the light-blue shadows that make the room feel quietly alive.
