The Leiden Collection
New York, United States
The Leiden Collection is a private collection of Dutch Golden Age art assembled by the American collectors Thomas S. Kaplan and Daphne Recanati Kaplan, beginning in 2003. Named after Rembrandt's native city of Leiden, it is one of the largest and most significant private holdings of seventeenth-century Dutch paintings, with a particular focus on Rembrandt and the Leiden "fijnschilders."
The collection includes A Young Woman Seated at the Virginals, a work attributed to Johannes Vermeer whose authorship has been the subject of scholarly debate. Rather than maintaining a permanent public building, the collection lends widely to museums and makes its holdings available through an online catalogue.
