St. Louis World's Fair (Louisiana Purchase Exposition)

Saint Louis, United States

The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, popularly known as the St. Louis World's Fair, was a world's fair held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, in 1904. It commemorated the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, by which the United States acquired a vast territory from France, and drew millions of visitors over its run.

Spread across a large landscaped site, the fair presented pavilions devoted to industry, science and the nations of the world, together with art exhibitions. It is recorded in art history as a temporary venue through which paintings were displayed rather than as a permanent institution.
