Kobe City Museum
Kobe, Japan
The Kobe City Museum is a municipal museum in the Chuo ward of Kobe, Japan, devoted to the history and culture of the city and to the broader history of cultural exchange between Japan and the West. It is especially known for its holdings related to the "southern barbarian" (Nanban) trade of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when Japan first came into sustained contact with European merchants and missionaries.
The collection includes Nanban screens and other works reflecting early European influence, archaeological material, old maps, and documents relating to Kobe and its port. The museum is housed in a former bank building in the city's historic district.
